A typological proposal to understand latin american interim governments (1980-2022)

Authors

Abstract

Between 1980 and 2022, twenty-two interim presidents have assumed power in Latin America. While the causes are manifold, the majority are linked to instability and presidential crises. This article proposes a typological classification based on empirical cases and employs a configurational methodological approach using the crisp-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (csQCA) techniques. Additionally, a descriptive analysis is provided to delve into the relationship between the typology and the selected cases. The results define the types of interim presidencies as: provisional, strong, challenging, weak, and failed, thereby demonstrating the variety of dynamics across different cases. The description delves into the application of the classification in two specific cases: Itamar Franco and Martín Vizcarra, illustrating the utility of the typology. Keywords: interim president, typology, presidential crisis, configurational method.
