Abstract

Peacekeeping operations are one of the main United Nations tools to maintain international peace and security. The Chilean-Argentinean Joint Combined Peace Force “Cruz del Sur” is one of the military units for that aim. It is a result of a broader initiative within the Chilean-Argentinean bilateral relations, which began with the Treaty of Peace and Friendship (1984). It is now an instrument of their shared multilateral politics. A better understanding of the Cruz del Sur origin and development will allow facing this binational military unit deployment difficulties, within a general consideration of the peacekeeping operations and the Chilean-Argentinean relations.
