The purpose of this paper is to help clarify the meaning of one of the most used terms in the language of International Relations: "détente". Being a multipurpose phenomenon for the different types of political observers, the academic contribution could consist of rigorously establishing the specific content of this concept, and its virtual utility as a tool for the study of International Relations. Through this effort, an attempt is also made to identify the spectrum of alternatives that may be present on the diplomatic horizon of the Third World and Latin America within the new international order.
