Abstract

The current global depression has its own characteristics and can be distinguished from that of the 1930s in many respects. But it also has different consequences for developing countries and for the world economy as a whole. We argue that its impact on developing countries needs to be studied with great care, as well as the possible positive effects that may come from the probable recovery of the North American economy and, later, of the economies of other developed countries, mainly Japan, the Federal Republic of Germany, France and the Netherlands. Also, the fundamental problems of Third World countries should not be overlooked in this analysis.
