The Tlatelolco Treaty, opened for signature on February 14, 1967, by virtue of which a nuclear-weapon-free zone was established in Latin America, was a notable diplomatic and political success. The issue of denuclearization and nuclear energy constitutes a very significant element for the transformation of regional military relations from a competition scheme to a cooperation system, hence, a detailed analysis of their development prospects, the objective of this paper, contributes to illustrate the problems and possibilities that these phenomena introduce in the regional security issue with the perspective granted by the 20 years of validity of the Treaty.
