During the first half of 1984 the US economy experienced an accelerated process of economic growth. However, in the second half of the year the dynamism of economic activity decreased significantly. During the first half of 1985, economic activity continued to expand extremely slowly. This paper presents an analysis of the main lines of evolution of the economy and economic policy of the United States during the 1984-1985 period ; the domestic and international repercussions of the fiscal deficit on the United States economy are evaluated from a short- and medium-term perspective; some of the sources of uncertainty and potential instability for its economy - and the international economy as a whole - in the future are discussed and, finally, some of the repercussions of these trends for the region are outlined.
