This paper analyzes the outstanding theoretical themes and approaches in the growing literature on foreign policies in Latin America and the Caribbean. Our purpose is to examine the various theoretical perspectives for the study of the external behavior of the countries of the region, including the approach to decision-making. As will be seen, there is a multiplicity of theoretical approaches to foreign policies in the region, the relative value of which largely depends on the problem to be investigated. The challenge for the future is to integrate those perspectives that are effectively compatible, to arrive at more complex and profound explanations of the foreign behavior of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.
