The Institute of International Studies of the University of Chile, the first center that was specifically dedicated to this discipline in Latin America, has addressed the area of the Pacific Basin applying a multidisciplinary approach, which has resulted in extensive academic and educational activity and has helped to formulate national policies towards the region. Its objective has been to contribute to the presence of Chile and Latin America in the Pacific Basin. This article briefly shows the political changes that have occurred in the Pacific Basin in the last twenty-five years and how the Institute, practically since its creation, allocated human and material resources to its knowledge, analysis and therefore its understanding.
