Foreign policy research both in and on Latin America has advanced and consolidated in recent years, although it also has limitations. On this basis, this article focuses on studies on foreign policy making and, more specifically, on the decision-making process. The main theoretical approaches - those based on external and internal sources - are described, which comprise a variety of aspects and which are integrated into a more general analytical framework that is developed first. It is concluded that given the complexity of Latin American foreign policies, these different perspectives should complement each other and suggests that a comparative analysis of the region's foreign policies should be encouraged.
