Abstract

For many, Europe has become a kind of integration model, due to the progress that has been made there. After the Second World War, a process of political, economic, social and security rapprochement began that was embodied in the Treaty of Maastricht, in which it was proposed, among others, to progressively develop a common foreign and security policy. This paper reflects on the viability of the European objective of having a common security policy, given the internal and external conditions that have been becoming apparent. In the first part, the institutional framework of Security in Europe is analyzed. Then some changes are specified derived from the post-Cold War and, finally, some possible scenarios or responses that arise from the European integration process are outlined, given the existing national and institutional conditions.
