The theory assumes that intellectual property systems protect inventors and their inventions, while promoting technological development and consumer satisfaction. This article takes the case of renewable energies, and shows that other factors also intervene, such as the degree of development of countries; the moment in which technological development took place; the mentality of consumers and their preference for non-renewable energies; the strategic use of intellectual property systems in the markets; the individual or corporate situation of the inventors themselves and the role of the State. This argument is illustrated with references to the case of Mexico and a catalog of patents obtained by Mexican inventors in the field of renewable energies is presented.
