El objetivo de este artículo es explicar la confianza en la policía a través del enfoque actitudinal que considera el efecto de las actitudes políticas, micro y macrosociales, sobre la variable dependiente (confianza en la policía), con datos de Lapop (2012) en 22 países latinoamericanos. La hipótesis es que en un contexto de baja calidad democrática, ineficacia de la policía para garantizar la seguridad pública y limitado respeto a la ley, es posible tener confianza institucional si las actitudes políticas de los ciudadanos son autoritarias. Los efectos de las actitudes políticas sobre la variable dependiente se prueban utilizando el modelo de efectos fijos por país. Los resultados confirman que las actitudes políticas son importantes para explicar la confianza en las instituciones policiales, y que las actitudes autoritarias analizadas tuvieron un impacto positivo sobre ella en América Latina. La principal contribución del estudio es identificar una asociación positiva entre autoritarismo y confianza institucional en el contexto de percances de la democracia y de las instituciones policiales.
