Working Memory and Aging

Abstract

Working memory is a cogntive mecanism which stores information temporarily in
order to use it and/or to store it permanentely. In addition, Working memory can be
affected by drug abuse and other psychopathological conditions. Aging has also an
important effect on the speed and accuracy of information processing in working
memory. This effect has been observed when comparing young and older subjects
studying working memory tasks. The purpose of this article is to describe the effect
of aging in working memory. The fact that the chilean population of over 60 is
continuously increasing requires the development of knowledge of their cognitive
functioning to facilitate their social integration.
