Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyse the translation of cultural references of the Spanish version of Carmen Gauger of the chapters 1-11 of the German novel Er ist wieder da, written by Timur Vermes. An ad hoc methodology based on existing cultural translation strategies (Gurindapalli and Qassem 2019 and Marcelo Wirnitzer 2007), historical translation techniques (De Luxán Hernández, 2012, 2019, 2021), general translation theories (Hurtado Albir, 2001; Venuti, 1995; Newmark, 1988; Nida, 1964) and Santamaria’s proposal (2000) will be applied. Through this analysis it will be concluded that culture is not a Paramenides’ “being” (inalterable and eternal), yet a Heraclitus’ notion (mutable) and that cultural translation tends to be intercultural, which reinforces the concepts of domextranjerización (De Luxán Hernández, 2021) and cultural identity (Fidalgo, 2019).
