Abstract

Intensification is a pragmatic strategy that contributes to the rhetorico argumentative aspect reinforcing what has been said or the speaker’s or somebody else’s point of view, be it coincidental or opposite, and in the social field as a reinforcing mechanism either appraising or threatening the speaker’s or somebody else’s image. Our objective is to describe and explain, in general, the functions of intensification in those two fields (argumentative and social) and, above all, its value in everyday conversation, on the basis of a qualitative analysis of Val.Es.Co. corpus of colloquial conversations (Briz y grupoVal. Es.Co., 2002 and Valesco 2.0, online: www.valesco.es, coordinated by Cabedo and Pons).
